In addition to the renovation of the Ruskin Heights Tornado Monument, the median directly behind the monument, the existing 14 trees  have been removed and a Memorial Tree Arbor is being planned for approximately 34 trees to be planted in this area, two trees planted on either side of the Ruskin High School sign and three in a diagonal row at the southwest corner of Burke Elementary School. The Kansas City Parks & Recreation have  removed the remaining 14 original Crabapple Trees. The Cleveland "Select" Pear Tree has been identified as the tree that will be planted.

Rosehill Gardens has been selected as the landscaper that will be planting the trees this Spring 2007 prior to the Rededication Ceremony. A maintenance and warranty plan will also be purchased so that watering, fertilizing and spraying the trees will be provided. The cost to "Adopt-A-Tree" is $500. In addition, a plaque will be placed at the base of each tree to show which organization, group, or family have donated the tree.

Cleveland Flower Pear Trees grow into a stronger tree than the Bradford Pear. Their superior branches support more weight and won't break under the weight of snow and ice. Cleveland Pears don't suffer storm damage like other trees. They are so strong and adaptable that they have become a very popular urban tree. Even better is the fact that they are more beautiful than the Bradford Pear, a very showy flowering tree.

The Cleveland Pears are also fruitless, so they don't cause a mess. Cleveland Pears bloom dense white flowers in the Spring. These trees have more flowers than any other flowering pear tree, creating a solid cloud of blooms in the Spring. In the Fall, the leaves turn from a deep green to a dark scarlet red, announcing that Fall has arrived.

ADOPT A TREE PROGRAM

The Ruskin Heights Homes Association invites people to assist in keeping the area in front of Ruskin High School beautified by "Adopting A Tree."  Your name will appear on the ground plaque as the sponsor of the tree dedicated to one of the Ruskin Heights Tornado fatalities. This is a living memorial to loved ones, families, and friends of long ago but never forgotten.

days until the Rededication.
